So much happens each day that my head spins sometimes :). Hehe, not really, but it does spin for different reasons altogether. Finally I have holidays after a long long semester - right through the summer with the Mozilla project, then placements, then focussing on GRE and TOEFL, and the course examinations also needed some attention come November. I really liked Automata and Compiler courses this semester, while AI was a big disappointment, partly because of the intriguing paper that the CS department produces each year out, and our beloved book, 'the History of AI' by Rich and Knight. :P

During the holidays, I will be working to develop an application to be deployed with Google Wave (I hope I write more about this later), and hopefully I will have atleast one paper submission under my belt. I also need to decide and finalise on my undergrad thesis topic - I really want to do something useful and I have been looking forward to doing this thesis for quite sometime. The final semester of my undergraduate degree has finally started and that calls for some fireworks itself. so the coming six months sure have lots of stuff lined up (there are other things that I keep to myself to maintain the sanctity of this PUBLIC blog :P).

I might as well write about the title now, it is starting to feel a little
unpleased (and oh, I am talking about Good Will Hunting, right?). I really like psychologically intriguing movies, and this one revolves about setting the mind of this 21 year old janitor-cum-genius at the MIT. The depth of his personality and thinking makes his redemption all the more revelating, with roles excellently performed by Matt Damon (the janitor), and Robbie Williams (the pschology professor).
But it ultimately boils down to the, if I daresay, cliched 'find what you really want to do and do it' epigram. And Damon runs off to his beloved Skylar at the end of the movie :). There are slight analogies everyone can draw from this movie, but I guess everyone needs a special someone or a special something they can live with passionately, pamper and care for, and feel in 'love'. Thats what we really are looking for in life, arent we?

So what do you do when you've found it? :)

One’s Personal Legend is what you have always wanted to accomplish. It calls NPN_GetValue(enum_value) to get the desired NPObject representing the browser window.
From that NPObject, it can perform the required task by using the API methods exposed by NPObject.

Now, in a single process world, Plugin and browser proccesses were same, so the plugin could directly ask for an NPObject representing the browser window, and work with that.
In a multiprocess world, plugin and the browser window exist in different processes, and if the plugin wants to interact with the browser window, the following difference in interaction takes place -
1. Plugin cannot handle NPObject directly. A proxy object is created in its memory, via which plugin communicates the NPObject 'id', and the required 'task/method' to be performed. This has to be supported via an IPDL protocol.
2. The new IPDL protocol, will be present in NPObject.ipdl, exposing methods defined in npruntime.h, allowing a plugin to communicate with the browser process.

Now, a few points need to be validated -
1. Can the code currently implementing the npruntime.h methods be used here with as good as no changes?
2. Where will the implementation of these methods be found?
3. Does the multiprocess infrastructure exist for different process/browser? If yes, is it in dom/plugins/, where the NPObject.ipdl has to be defined? In short, I need to know where to fit in my work.

</bold>

Garden State

Another great one :)
I think you can immediately appreciate the music - If you use multiple interfaces to connect the internet, for example, say wireless and lan, or two different lan cards, you might have sometimes faced a problem that you are able to connect to the internet - you can ping your ISP router, you can ping website's addresses, but you can't use your DNS. This is what I had been dealing with ever since I started using wireless and lan interchangeably to connect to the internet. It confuses the Windows Network management, and which screws up your DNS or some gateway, and for me, the problem was I could not use my DNS.

I believe the problem was due to intermingling of connections somehow, since multiple interfaces were being used, and windows kind of mixed them up when all are enabled, eg, it might use the gateway for your wired connection when you are in wireless mode or so on.

What I did was I changed the connections from automatic metric to a specific metric. So far it has done the trick for me. I just realised this today, and tried it out, and i was able to ping google.com, instead of just some static ip I somehow remember. I am going to test this out furthermore, and so for now, this remains a beta post :D.

The Dark Knight: Movie Review

I saw the most awaited movie this year (atleast for me), the Dark Knight today, the sequel to the much liked Batman Begins, the movie surely does justice to the hype surrounding its release.

Firstly, it is the typical action movie you would want to see in a cinema - the cinematography is great, the soundwork and the visual candy is just deserving enough to pay 150 rupees for alone(that too for a 2 hr 24 min treat ) but there is more - and by the time you are leaving the hall, it is one of those rare occasions when you want to wait and watch the credits - kind of that hangover after an enthralling time.

This one has two of the bad guys(so called?) - the Joker, and Two Face - comic readers are probably aware about these two already.
The Joker is probably the most atttractice character in the movie - notorious like captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, but just as very dark, in his own comic ways. The guy leaves you laughing even for sadistic elements in the movie and oh I almost forgot - its brilliantly done by Heath Ledger, the acting is just amazing.

The first half is pretty decent - small action sequences, not alot of story, but everything is just developing. Frankly, I believe they could have cut down some crap in the first half, because the it sometimes gets boring and monotonous. But don't get disheartened while you are watching the movie - you are nowhere close to reaching the awesome storyline this movie has to offer until you watch the second half - one and a quarter hour passes like a breeze, and all the time you are on the edge of your seat trying to figure out whats going to happen in each scene. The characters almost fall into their places, and you can appreciate where everybody is going and their mindset.

To finish things off, the ending is superb - you get the whole moral concept thingy which I personally was missing until the very end(or the last 15 minutes), and by the time you are going out of the halls, you can start pondering about the name of the movie and write answers to one of those typical 'Justify the title' questions in study of literature.

Must watch!
I gave it 8/10 on IMDb, because of the slightly off first half.

firefox 3 rc1 vs safari 3.1

This might be interesting for those following the browser wars.
I ran the SunSpider Javacript Benchmark, and it reports Firefox 3.0 RC1 1.24 times faster than Safari 3.1.

How do you like that for a counterattack, to an earlier released Safari, which was much much faster than on Javascript than Firefox 2.0.

The new versions final release is not out yet, although the release is quite stable and quits being a memory hog. It did crash once or twice doing normal browsing, but it shouldn't be anything to put you off from atleast giving firefox 3 a try.

The features haven't changed much from the 2 series - one noticeable change being that it searches for addresses based on titles, URL matches, etc, as you type in the address bar. This I felt is a quite handy feature for all the lazy ones. Also, the suggest menu has much larger text, which allows useful results to spring to notice much easily.

For the cons, I have heard that RC1 contains critical bugs. You might want to jump here for a better picture.

Oh, by the way - Mozilla announced the shipping date for Firefox 3 - [quoted from LinuxWorld.com.au]

Mozilla Wednesday set next Tuesday, June 17, as the release date for Firefox 3.0, the first major upgrade of the open-source browser in nearly 20 months.

"We're proud to announce that we're ready," said Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's product lead. Such a network has uses similar to a LAN - you can transfer files between the machines, share an internet connection, etc.
You can also use bluetooth to connect a computer and a mobile device and share your GPRS internet on the computer.

What will you need?
2 bluetooth enabled machines, with their drivers setup.
Here we use a laptop with inbuilt bluetooth support(win vista, client) and a desktop with a bluetooth dongle(win xp pro, host).

The Process
Check if your bluetooth dongle is being recognized properly, and has the proper drivers installed. My XP pro. didn't have the required drivers, so I used the ones from broadcom. We are using the Desktop as the HOST and the Laptop as the CLIENT.
1. Turn on your bluetooth adapters on both computers. Make them in discoverable mode.
This can be done by going to Bluetooth Devices Settings>Options>check make the device discoverable.
2. Add each device to the other's Bluetooth Devices list. This can be done in the Bluetooth Devices Dialog>Devices tab>Add>Follow onscreen steps. Remember, the devices must be discoverable and on.
3. Now you need to setup a network connection between the two computers.
Since we use the laptop as a client, we setup a connection in the laptop to connect to the host and setup the host to allow the connection.
On vista, you can create a connection by
-Choosing "Setup a connection or network" in the Network and Sharing Center side pane. Choose "Bluetooth Personal Area Network(PAN)."
-A dialog will search for all devices that support PAN. You might have to add your desktop to the list shown in the dialog.
-Once your desktop is listed in the PAN Available list, click on Connect.
By this time, a network connection has been created and is querying the host(the desktop) to allow the connection. You must allow the connection on the host for the connection to be successful.

4. A bluetooth connection has been established between your desktop and laptop. Now to setup a shareable internet.
5. On the host i.e. the desktop, goto Network Connections(win xp) and open Properties dialog for the connection you use to connect to the internet. If you use bridged mode, use the dialing in connection's properties. If you connect directly via ethernet, use the corresponding LAN connection's properties.
6. In properties, Click on Sharing tab(or something similar) and check "Allow this connection to be shared". Apply the settings.
7. At this time, you should have a working internet connection on your laptop wirelessly sharing through the desktop. Make sure you are within bluetooth's range(just be within 3-4 meters of the host).

At this point, following the same procedure, I couldn't open any websites and I was within the range of my Desktop. I could ping between the desktop and laptop properly. This deemed the bluetooth connectivity was fine. Something's wrong with the internet. I tried pinging 208.67.222.222. Again, a fine ping resulted(~310 ms). Hmm. internet connectivity is fine too. Try ping yahoo.com.
Couldn't resolve the domain name.
You must setup your DNS properly in the client's connection properties, and the IP configuration as well.As far as I know, bluetooth won't use a DHCP(the desky won't provide any such service under normal situations) so setup any intelligent IP address, and choose the DNS that your ISP provides or just use 208.67.222.222
Restart your connections.
Your shared internet should be working fine.

Mist - code breaking

Another code breaking event, our own hosted on dcetech.com, the home of IEEE-DCE student chapter on the internet.

Its getting a huge response, i might post the analytics soon.

In case you end up seeing this on google, please try it out on http://mist.dcetech.com.

With love - Paritosh

Oh btw, happy valentine's day :D

Between worlds

I continute my incessant attempts to write out my vows here, partly because theres nobody to talk to and I have an MD exam coming up in 2 days. Really can't get myself to read that crap, but systems theory says that one has to do what he has to, to be in a system.
anyway, this can't be worse than measurements, or it might be. false assumptions are becoming a kind of habit now.

hmm, anyway, what were the so called theory exams kind of finished yesterday, leaving me into a state of vacuum right now, caught between worlds, nothing to do, except thinking what to do.
you gotta admit then, one thing that is good about exams is that you do not waste time thinking what you have to do next. the answers are pretty simple, especially if you are giving the DAUNTING 3rd semester exams at DCE, the college where you can predict to a certainty og 66.6..%(2/3) which questions are going to come, and so you manage to get 66.7% + the additional benefits which you get by your toil going through an entire syllabus, so you manage to improve your record marginally.

anyway, i will write about my PA practical exam, since im extremely bored and i have no life :D.

Some teacher: 20 minutes to write the theory, apparatus, and draw the circuit diagrams. please go and write your aims. all instructions are written there.

we do as told. 20 mins(supposedly) pass. suddenly i see parth looking towards me, smiling in a sort of helpless way, when the lab assistant enters my cabin(i was given that computer cabin to sit and write that theory) and asks for our sheets. im nonplussed.
i got blocked rotor/noload tests on an induction motor. the damn experiment has 4 circuit diagrams. 20 minutes? i ask him to give me some more time. he refers me to the examiner. parth who got no load/blocked rotor, along with me, goto the examiner.

me: sir, please give us some extra time. sir, chaar(4) circuit diagrams hain.

him: nahin. koi time nahin milega. wahaan(instruction sheet copy karte time) par pehle baate karte rahe ab time chahiye.

me: sir, please..4 diagrams hain. kisi ka bhi poora nahin hua.

him: arre mujhe mat batao kitne diagrams hain. 1 circuit diag banane mein 3 minute lagte hain. baaki time theory aur apparatus mein laga sakte hain.

me: sir, please..(at a loss of words). I look at the lady teacher for some sympathy.
him: koi time nahin milega. bhaago yahaan se.

Right. So with a morale lacking stride, we again do as told. Half heartedly complete our experiments. We get back our sheets. I get a B+(or beta +) nobody in our group does better. parth manages a B-. This is when I just drew the circuit diagrams, no apparatus, no theory, while parth atleast completed his work assigned.
This college is weird.

Bad Days, again

All I can say is, in general, people suck.
[heartbroken]

The Essential Paradox -

A: I really don't care what people think of me.
B: Give me a break.
A: I really don't!! Maybe because Australia is also inhabited by the Aborigines, but then aren't we all monkey descendants?
Moreover, I saw a BBC talkshow where some Australian lady was talking about emancipation of the Aborigines in general, and that they are discriminated against even in Australia.

Why should "monkey chanting" attribute to racial discrimination?
One thing is very clear that we aren't as...you may say...overproud as a nation to racially abuse anyone, especially if that person belongs to Australia. WMP11, and Yahoo LaunchCast Radio

Its enough I took all these names in one breath, but thats as much together as they can be.
If you regularly listen to internet radios, then I don't know how in the world can you miss Yahoo! LaunchCast Radio.

The Prelude
I used to listen to the radio till sometime ago, it weirdly stopped playing songs - It would tune in but the timing would remain 0: 00: 00/ 0: 00: 00. This was really weird problem. The usual suspects were my firewall, since firewalls are known to create problems like these. I even tried shutting down my AV but still no respite. I downloadeded the exclusive Yahoo Media Player(please check the official name), but still the same problem.
I kind of gave up on this problem, thinking Yahoo! servers were messed up, but weirdly, I couldnt see any similar problem with anybody else, when I tried googling.

So heres the problem
I got the big break yesterday, when I suddenly felt like playing the radio again, and yeah, again Yahoo didn't work. This time I tried through the browser, and it gave an error: "There was an error in opening the stream."
This time the focus of suspicion went on IE7, but there was no way to check this. Yahoo Help listed that they supported IE6 and above, and couldn't check in Firefox since that wasn't supported. So I asked Parth to open up this radio and try running it on his compu. And it worked! And he had IE6! There we were then - some problem with IE7 not being compatible with Yahoo Radio. So off goes IE7. Reboot. But again, same error.
Theres another Microsoft Product that I had upgraded about the same time this problem started occurring. And was related to media playing. Yes, the smart ones would have guessed it right - Windows Media Player 11. This was not even in Yahoo!'s compatibility listing, so off it goes(not so easy as it seems - requres 2 reboots!). Open yahoo radio, and finally, I can hear to the Alternative Rock station again.

Known issues with WMP11 and LaunchCast Radio?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://paritosh1010.blogspot.com/2007/05/ie7-wmp11-and-yahoo-launchcast-radio_09.html' title='IE7. Almost all the end-of-sem work is complete, and after ages will I get to breathe free again.
Firefox is working normally again, surprisingly after a pacman -Su done overnight yesterday.
I am now almost decided to work on a Natural Language Semantics project. We(Ujjwal and I) need to start looking a bit into the research part since we are going into this project for academic reasons(not to be disclosed in a blog:P hehe jk.) but I don't get the part about research. Then again, the picture should become utterly clear with a bit of insight into AI.

I am placed reasonably in the class 55/70 in the papers we have received till now. But the worse, in the form of PEE is yet to come. Hopefully, I do well in Deori POM tomorrow and the PEE does bring in surprises.

[By the way, I will start working on the Linux post as soon as this work hell gets over.]

The shadow proves the sunshine

I have alot of things going for me at this very time, you know. Just confirmed that I have my regular dose of flu again. So that goes for a few slow days around.
Happiness seems to elude me nowadays. Gosh I need to do an attitude makeover.

Apart from that, everything is pretty fine. I got a 17 on 20 in our Applied Mechanics paper(mid-semester), in which our teacher just thought it wise to distribute marks for free(I didn't deserve more than 13 if the papers were checked properly). But that goes for everybody, when there are people getting 19 and 20 marks like anything. Then there are a few unfortunate(?) cases, what can I say..
A few other exam papers are also due(namely Math, PEE, Intro 2 Prog., and POM). In addition to this, our first semester End-Sem exam results about to come any day this or next week. So yeah, pretty happening times ahead.

Ahh, but this post was about trust..what I was about to title this post, but well..maybe.
I feel a real lack of trust nowadays. Friends doesn't seem a familiar notion now. Everybody is just mad about making their career and doing well in life. And everybody is willing to sacrifice and use their so-called friends as stepping stones which they can use and move to higher levels.
So people like me(undecisive and non-directed) are caught in dilemmas which feel like unsolvable Paradoxes. All this might sound really cliched but whatever.
So yeah I don't really feel too well about life nowadays. I feel depression looming in on me. I feel weak.
But I guess I need to develop a fighting spirit and fight these evil and negative spirits off of me.

Anyway, gotta drink muh tea, got a little cold
Gotta stretch those legs, feeling a li'l old
I hope in the near time I would do good and find
A person and friend who might just change my mind.

[Posts to come: A newbie's experience to linux, and the glamorous(or most talked about :D) desktop environments, and my favorite distro and DE]

My name..

Get Your Cyborg Name

Woes
General: I am messed up.
Specific: I figured I have anxiety disorder.

Observations
My dad tries to manhandle my attitude (yes, you can manhandle abstract things).
I am probably too weak, so he keeps remarking on stuff I have done wrong - to make me stronger (as in I can bare the harshness of the world).
I notice a certain disattachment towards me of certain people, then again, I notice a certain attachment of some people.

Nonetheless, life goes on, and so do I.
Have to pull of something big in these next festivals. We did a pretty good job with our bot, but actually, we misinterpreted the problem. So we made the strengthened our bot in aspects which had no vitality in our event. No superfluous details

2. Since we misinterpreted the problem, and as is the case with most misinterpretations, you think you are right until on calm analysis, you find out the contrary. The result here being that I just blasted out at a few innocent organisers, innocent since they were not responsible for OUR misinterpretation.

Lesson to be learnt: Never get carried away by emotions.
Life is not lived on lessons. Life is lived real time.

Dogs, after cows?

I was studying to get my math assignment done when I heard these screams. I thought it was some kids who were probably fighting with each other, but the shrieks just grew shriller and sharper. I looked out of my back room window and I saw a lady peering in the direction from which the shrieks were coming. I stepped out of my room, and I was getting the impression this was much more than just some kid fight, but then I saw a kid running just across my house. The shrieks still continued. Possibilities crossed my mind - Dogs? Rape? Murder? I decided to go out and see, so I went inside to search for the key to the gate and opened it. I stepped outside and peered in the direction of the shouts but could see nothing. I moved forward, anxious as I was to see what was the matter when I saw our chaukidaar with a rod trying to shove away a dog from a lady. I was dumbstruck. Should I go in there? But the chaukidaar seemed to have managed it. Moments later, I saw it was a lady who was attacked by a dog. I could see her back, and again, the most dreaded thoughts crossed my mind - was it my mom? It looked like her - She was wearing a suit which I can associate with my mom. Should I go and take a look? She turned around. Unsuitable to this situation as it may sound, I thanked God it wasn't my mom. It was someone I didn't know but I could gauge her expression pretty well - She was terrified and gave a little cry in anguish. I searched her body of any signs of bruises but there were none. People had also come out into their balconies, out of their homes and were gazing at the scene of incident. My neighbour came and put her arm over the victim's shoulder, and started guiding her home - I could now see cuts and bruises oozing with blood on the lower sides of her arms - nowhere else.
I answered to my friend that "it was a dog", who probably couldn't see what happened since his vision was blocked.
I paused for a moment or two - still not knowing what to do - and then walked into my home, head down, thinking, pondering.
I learnt it was the daughter of an advocate who lived a few homes away from ours.
The events, I figured from conversations of other people might have been like this - She got out from her car with her kids, and was attacked by a dog. She must have been worried about her children, so she caught hold of the dog by its neck and asked her children to leave, who were quite adamant not to do so, but they still went away - they were the kids I saw walking across my home. At this moment, a neighbour(whose story I had heard), sensing apparent danger, went to the chaukidaar and called him for help, who then came and took care of the dog.

This incident took place 15 minutes ago. Right after I came back into my home, I called my mom to check if she was ok - she was pretty dumbstruck to why I had called her but I was relieved.

Looking back at it now, I can realize the essential love of a mother for her children. I can also realize the courage the lady showed - to catch hold of the dog and asking her children to go. Frankly, I cannot imagine what I would have done - I think I would have silently fighted the dog if I were alone.
For remedies, I think its about time we get to catching dogs now, after cows.

Projects, Presentations

OpenWebMail needs our attention in the coming few weeks for a project has been assigned to our might to develop an AutoSuggest feature for OpenWebMail's Address book, which if you search for, surprisingly has already been developed. And our first period itself was with the most "khadoos" teacher in the college, Mr Jagannath and just came for 25 minutes to the workshop in a 3 hour period and lectured us for 20 minutes, seriously hurting the ego of one boy, and getting on the nerves of all others.
After this 9-12 ordeal, we had lunch and our group of 4-5 went to the canteen(I think we were the only first years there - everybody else was probably hiding from ragging). Surprisingly, nothing much happened to us -not even any questions - What year are you or anything. I guess all of the seniors were busy looking for bakraas outside. But when we left our canteen, we were caught hold of by a third year and asked us to go in this room and then a bunch of other people came and there we had our first experience of ragging.
Papa had told me a couple of days ago that college ragging is very bad and harassing and they ask you to sing and stuff, but I was like, whats difficult in singing. I realized what was difficult when they asked us to do it today - I mean, the whole atmosphere is different. The only point I could take comfort from was that there were like 5-6 of us being ragged so we felt protected.
I WONT SHARE THE DETAILS WITH YOU.

Anyway, the day went off with us getting some real taste of DCE lectures today, with Humanities, Applied Math and Manufacturing Lectures after lunch.
And I come home tired to find my internet is not working.

A very adventurous first day...

First day at college

Fourteen years of school and finally, college arrived.
The day started with expected hype and excitement, and some tension too, as I had to get my photographs taken. Doing that, we heard the Principal's address and other speeches by the faculty members at DCE - not too many by people in our department though(computers). This was followed by a tour of the college conducted in groups(I was in group A) by our Computer Centre incharge. I had already seen part of the campus before so it was nice seeing the newer parts - especially the workshops, of which I have a 3-hour session tomorrow - sounds fun though, the workshop part. Anyway, college starts 9 am each day and ends at 4 pm at all days except friday. Really looking forward to the first day of teaching tomorrow, with all new teachers - lecturers and blah blah now, but yeah, gotta be fun.

Oh and this is my first post, congrats to me:).
Please comment if anybody sees this - will be highly appreciated.
